Why Real Solid Wood Makes the Difference

We fit four shutter ranges. Three are composite or vinyl. Madison is the only one made from genuine timber, solid Paulownia hardwood, finished to show the grain rather than sealed under a smooth painted face.

Paulownia is unusual. It's the fastest-growing hardwood species, which makes it sustainable in a way oak or basswood aren't. It's also lighter than most timbers of comparable strength. That last point matters more than it sounds. When you're hanging tall panels in a bay window or fitting full-height shutters across a wide opening, lighter wood means the panels don't sag and the hinges don't fight you over the years.

The cellular structure of the grain also acts as a natural thermal insulator. Closed in winter, the louvres trap a layer of still air against the glass and the framed panel adds a second barrier. White finishes reflect summer heat back out. It isn't double glazing, but you feel it most in older houses with single-glazed sash windows.

Choose Your Shutter Style

Plantation shutters come in four main layouts. The same four work across solid wood, faux wood, and vinyl, the choice is about how the window is used, not what material it's made from. We'll talk through it at the home visit, but here's the framework so you can start with a preference.

Tier on Tier

Two independent sets of panels stacked vertically. Open the top for daylight while keeping the bottom closed for privacy. The bedroom and front-of-house favourite.

Café Style

Bottom-half panels only. Privacy at sill height, full daylight above. Common in front-facing rooms overlooking a pavement, and in kitchens above the sink.

Solid

Flat solid wood panels with no louvres. Total light reduction when closed, traditional appearance. Available as café style, full height, or tier on tier.

There are four more configurations available, useful for wider windows, shaped openings, or rooms that need full blackout:

See Solid Wood Shutters in Our Livingston Showroom

Solid wood shutters are hard to judge from a website. The colour reads differently in print, the louvres look heavier in photos than in real life, and the choice between Elliptical and Urban blade profiles only really makes sense when you've got both in your hand.

Our showroom in Livingston has full-size Madison sample panels in every louvre size, plus working tier-on-tier and gliding-track demos. The Paulownia samples are the actual material we'd order for your job, finished to the same standard you'd get fitted at home.

You can drop in unannounced. Most customers spend twenty minutes, long enough to settle on louvre size and finish, then book a home visit for measuring once you know what you're after.

25 Finishes, Plus Custom Colour Matching

Madison comes in 25 standard finishes, 13 painted shades and 12 wood stains. If none of those is the right match for your room, we can custom-match the shutter to any colour from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Dulux. That's something none of the other shutters we fit can offer.

Painted Shades

The painted range covers the standard shutter palette, crisp whites at one end, deep greys at the other, with a wide family of creams in between. The finishes are sprayed in workshop conditions for a smooth even coat that brushwork can't match.

Wood Stains

The wood stain range runs from light golden tones through to rich dark timber shades. Stained finishes show the natural Paulownia grain, the kind of finish you'd ask a furniture maker to apply to a piece of solid oak.

Custom Colour Matching

Already chosen a colour for the room? Madison shutters can be custom-matched to any shade from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Dulux. Bring the colour name or paint code to the home visit and we'll order the shutters in the matched shade, no surcharge, same lead time as a stock colour.

Choose Your Louvre Size

Madison comes in four louvre sizes, the width of each slat across the panel. Smaller louvres feel more traditional, larger ones more architectural. As a rough guide, 76mm or 89mm covers most West Lothian homes. 63mm suits narrower or cottage-style windows. 114mm needs a bit of ceiling height to look right, usually rooms over nine feet. We bring all four sizes to the home visit so you can hold them against the actual window before deciding.

What Our Customers Say

Here’s what homeowners across West Lothian have said about our blinds and fitting service.

★★★★★

We had four wooden and three roller blinds made to measure and installed by Stylerite Blinds.

From the initial measuring service to installation, everything was carried out professionally by a company that really puts their customers first.

They have a huge range of quality products to suit all budgets, my only problem was what style to choose!

A great family business which I have no hesitation in recommending

★★★★★

Stylerite have just supplied and fitted new blinds to all the windows of my new home and I have to say they are outstanding. I have a mixture of roller blinds, fabric/silk blackout blinds and wooden blinds and they are just gorgeous, totally finishes off the house.

They are of an excellent quality, blinds and all fittings included and fitted expertly to the windows. I've seen other blinds at cheaper prices but they do not compare to the quality and style that Stylerite's has to offer. Very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend Stylerite to anyone.

Excellent customer service from Audrey and Paul, nothing was too much trouble especially as it took me time to make up my mind - too much selection!

Roller blinds in conservatory and PVC vertical blinds to the rest of the house.

Excellent quality of blinds, love them. The salesman Peter was very nice and I did not feel pressured into going ahead. Explained everything clearly. The fitter, Paul, was very experienced in his job, very tidy also.

Will be recommending the company and would definitely use them again.

Customer Questions

Common Questions About Solid Wood Shutters

Answers to common questions about our premium solid wood shutters.

Generally not. Wood and steady moisture don't agree. The panels can warp at the top edges and the finish can lift around the hinges. A well-ventilated en-suite is borderline, we'll fit Madison there if you're committed to it, with the warranty caveat that wet-room failure isn't covered. A busy family bathroom, a shower room, or a steam-heavy kitchen is a no.

For wet rooms, our Poly vinyl shutters are fully waterproof. For kitchens that aren't shower-wet, the faux wood range handles humidity fine.

Yes. Madison shutters can be custom-matched to any shade from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Dulux. Bring the colour name or paint code to the home visit and we'll order the shutters in the matched shade. No surcharge for the match, you pay the standard Madison painted-shutter price. Lead time is the same.

Lead time from order to installation can be up to 12 weeks. Madison shutters are handcrafted in solid Paulownia to your exact measurements, so there's no off-the-shelf shortcut.

Most installations are complete in a single day.

Yes, measurably, in our experience. Estate agents in West Lothian regularly mention shutters as a selling feature, particularly in period properties and bay-windowed sandstone houses. Unlike curtains or blinds, shutters typically stay with the property when you move, so they're a fitted feature rather than a furnishing. Solid wood specifically reads as a quality investment in a way vinyl doesn't, and viewers tend to comment on it.

Easier than most people expect. A soft-cloth dust over the louvres every couple of weeks keeps the worst of it off, the same routine you'd use on any wooden furniture. For a deeper clean, a barely-damp microfibre wiped along each louvre and the frame is enough. The painted and stained finishes are sealed, so they handle light cleaning fine.

What you don't want to use: furniture polish, white spirit, or anything alcohol-based, they soften the finish over time. Avoid soaking the louvres or letting water pool on the bottom rail. Solid wood and standing water aren't friends.

If you've gone for a wood stain and want to refresh the colour after fifteen or twenty years, Santa Fe supply touch-up kits.
